What is Losec and what is it used for?
Losec is a treatment for acid reflux or heartburn. It contains the active ingredient omeprazole, which is part of a group of drugs known as ‘proton pump inhibitors’. It reduces the symptoms associated with heartburn such as pain in the chest and inflammation.
What is Acid Reflux (GORD)?
Gastro-Oesophageal Reflux Disease (GORD) is when the barrier normally between the stomach and oesophagus (the tube connecting your stomach to your throat) is impaired. This allows acid that the stomach produces to pass through and into the gullet, creating a painful burning sensation in the chest.
How does it work?
Proton pump inhibitors work to reduce the amount of acid that your stomach produces so that it cannot pass through the barrier called the sphincter and into the oesophagus. This, in turn, reduces the symptoms associated with acid reflux.
How should I take Losec?
The recommended dose for adults is one capsule daily for 4 weeks and then another 4-8 weeks if it is not fully healed. To ensure they work correctly it is important that the tablets be swallowed whole and not crushed, broken or chewed. The best time to take these capsules or tablets is in the morning with plenty of water.
What is the difference between Losec and Omeprazole?
They are medically equivalent medications. Losec contains the active ingredient omeprazole, also present in Generic Omeprazole and in the same amounts. Even though the brand version and the generic are the same, Generic Omeprazole is available at a lower cost.
