Maxalt is available as a tablet or a melt containing rizatriptan to treat migraines.

What is Maxalt and how does it work?

It is a migraine headache treatment whose active ingredient rizatriptan benzoate forms part of the selective serotonin 5-HT receptor agonist or triptan class of medication. Rizatriptan is used to treat the headache phase of the migraine and works by narrowing the temporarily widened blood vessels surrounding the brain that is thought to cause migraines.

When and how should I take it?

The recommended dose of Maxalt is 10mg with water, to be taken as soon as you feel the onset of a migraine. It is best to take the medication on an empty stomach to ensure fast absorption.

You can take another tablet if the migraine returns, as long as it is at least 2 hours after the first. If the first pill has no effect on your headache, do not take another one for the same attack. Do not take more than 2 tablets within 24 hours and you should not take a tablet to prevent a migraine.

How long does it take to work?

Maxalt has the fastest onset of action of all the triptan tablets. The pills start working about 30 minutes after ingestion.

How long does it last?

The drug lasts about 2-3 hours after taking it.

What is the difference between Maxalt and Rizatriptan?

They are medically equivalent as both contain the active ingredient rizatriptan benzoate and work to contract the blood vessels in the head in the same way.

Is Maxalt available in any other form?

Rizatriptan is sold as orodispersible tablets that disperse on the tongue and wafers that dissolve in the mouth.

What are the side effects of Maxalt?

Common side effects of Maxalt that may affect up to 1 in 10 users include:

  • Tingling
  • Decreased mental alertness
  • Flushing
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Decreased sensitivity of the skin
  • Insomnia
  • Palpitations
  • Indigestion
