Canesten External Cream is an effective first line treatment for fungal infections and irritation caused by thrush.

What is Canesten Cream used for?

Canesten 1% External Cream is used to treat fungal infections such as ringworm, athlete’s foot, fungal nappy rash and fungal sweat rash. Canesten External Cream is also highly effective at providing fast-acting relief from the symptoms of external thrush found on sensitive areas such as the vulva or the end of the penis.

How does Canesten Cream treat thrush?

Canesten External Cream is an antifungal treatment that works by killing the yeast that causes the fungal infection. Canesten Cream contains the powerful active antifungal ingredient clotrimazole, a substance that actively fights the cause of fungal skin infections. Canesten Cream helps to soothe associated itching and soreness, and can be applied directly to the vulva or labia (external thrush) for effective relief.

The generic version of Canesten External 1% Cream, Clotrimazole External 1% Cream, works with the same medical efficacy and is less expensive.

How to use Canesten External Cream:

Always use Canesten Antifungal Cream exactly as described in the patient information leaflet or as your doctor or pharmacist has advised. If you are not sure how to use it, check with your doctor or a pharmacist. It is advisable to follow these directions closely:

  • Pierce the seal of the tube before use by inverting the cap and pressing it against the seal.
  • Apply a thin and even layer of Canesten External cream to the affected area and gently rub it in 2 or 3 times a day.
  • A 1/2cm long strip of cream is enough to cover an area of about the size of the hand.
  • Depending on the type of infection, the recommended duration of the treatment might vary.
  • The treatment is generally required for a minimum of two weeks but up to four weeks may be necessary, depending on the type of infection.

The associated symptoms of thrush such as itching or soreness should improve within a few days of treatment, although signs such as redness and scaling may take longer to disappear.

If symptoms persist, consult your doctor. Canesten Cream is for external use only.

Do not suddenly stop using Canesten as this may cause the symptoms of the infection to return.

How long does it take Canesten Cream to treat thrush?

Canesten Cream usually clears thrush within 2 weeks, but if you are still experiencing symptoms after 4 weeks, contact your doctor.

What to do if you forget to apply Canesten External Cream?

Apply Canesten as soon as you remember and then continue the rest of the treatment as normal. Do not take an increased dose to make up for the one you missed.

Can you use Canesten External Cream internally?

You cannot use Canesten Cream internally. If you do accidentally swallow it or apply it internally, tell your doctor straight away or contact your nearest A&E department.

Can you use Canesten Cream when pregnant or breastfeeding?

If you are pregnant, breastfeeding or are trying to get pregnant, it is important to consult your doctor before using Canesten Cream.

How does Canesten External Cream interact with contraceptives?

Canesten Cream may reduce the effectiveness of rubber contraceptives, such as condoms or diaphragms. Make sure you use alternative precautions or avoid having sex for at least five days after administering the cream.

What are the ingredients of Canesten External Cream?

The active ingredient of Canesten Cream is clotrimazole at a strength of 1% w/v.

Other ingredients are benzyl alcohol, polysorbate 60, sorbitan stearate, cetyl palmitate, cetostearyl alcohol, octyldodecanol and purified water. If you are allergic to any of these substances do not use the Canesten Cream and speak to your doctor immediately.

How to store Canesten External Cream?

Do not store Canesten Cream above 25℃ and keep out of reach of children. Canesten Cream has a shelf life of 36 months.
