What is Canesten Thrush External Cream?

Canesten Thrush External Cream is used to relieve the external irritation caused by internal thrush infection.

If you need treatment for internal thrush, you may use either Canesten Pessary 500mg or Fluconazole 150mg oral capsule, or speak to the Pharmica pharmacy team for further advice.

What is thrush?

Caused by a yeast infection, thrush is actually quite common. Thrush is caused by a yeast called Candida, which is a type of fungus that thrives in warm and moist environments. Thrush is more likely to occur as a result of:

  • Skin irritation
  • Hormone changes, such as pregnancy or menopause
  • Antibiotics
  • A weakened immune system as a result of HIV or chemotherapy

Is thrush harmful or permanent?

Thrush is harmless but will cause discomfort and can return after treatment.

Can men get thrush?

Even though thrush is usually thought of as a condition that only affects women, men can get it too.

Men may contract the infection as a result of sexual intercourse with a woman who is infected. Despite this, thrush is not classified as an STI (Sexually Transmitted Infection).

Who is Canesten Thrush External Cream suitable for?

Anyone aged between 16-60 suffering from the effects of external thrush. It should not be used if you are allergic to clotrimazole, or any of the other ingredients contained in the cream. If you have an STI or illness, then speak to a doctor or a member of the Pharmica pharmacy team before using.

Can this cream be used when pregnant or breastfeeding?

If pregnant or breastfeeding only use Canesten Thrush External Cream when under the supervision of a midwife or doctor.

How often should Canesten External Thrush Cream be used?

For women, the cream should be applied to the affected area around the vagina two to three times a day. The cream should be applied thinly and evenly before being rubbed in gently. It should not be used for more than seven days. For men, the cream should be applied to the end of the penis two to three times a day, for up to two weeks.

Are there any side effects?

This product is generally well tolerated. However, as with all medicines, some people may experience side effects or be allergic to the cream. Signs of an allergic reaction include:

  • Rash
  • Breathing difficulties
  • Trouble swallowing
  • Swelling in the lips, face, tongue, or throat
  • Dizziness

What to do if you experience side effects or an allergic reaction after using Canesten Thrush External Cream

If you notice any side effects or symptoms of an allergic reaction, it is important to discontinue use and seek urgent medical attention.
