What is Canesten Thrush Internal Cream?

Canesten’s internal cream is a single-use, internal antifungal cream used to treat thrush - a fungal infection that affects the genitals and skin.

What is it used for?

The cream is used to treat thrush at the source of the infection. It may be used by women who are suffering from dryness or who prefer it over a pessary.

How does Canesten Thrush Internal Cream work?

The active ingredient of the treatment is clotrimazole, an antifungal medication used to get rid of fungal infections. Clotrimazole works by creating holes in the cell membranes of fungi, causing the cell contents to leak out. This kills the fungal cells and prevents them from returning.

How long does Canesten Thrush Internal Cream take to work?

The treatment should clear the infection within three days of use.

How do I use the cream?

The treatment is an internal cream. It should be inserted as high as possible into the vagina using the applicator included in the box. For comfortable and convenient treatment, the treatment should be applied just before bed.

Who can’t use Canesten Thrush Internal Cream?

You should only use this cream if you have previously been diagnosed with thrush by your GP. If you are pregnant or trying to become pregnant you should consult with your doctor before using the cream. It’s important to remember that the cream may reduce the effectiveness of rubber contraceptives, so you should use a different precaution for at least five days after treatment.

You should not use this treatment if you have had an allergic reaction to clotrimazole or any other azole antifungal medication in the past.

What are the side effects of Canesten Thrush Internal Cream?

The treatment is safe and effective for the majority of women who use it. However, some people may experience side effects including:

  • Vaginal irritation, itchiness, burning, stinging or redness. Consult your doctor as soon as possible if you experience these symptoms after using the treatment
  • Pelvic pain
  • Abdominal pain
  • Vaginal bleeding

How should I store the treatment?

Canesten Thrush Internal Cream should be stored in a dry, cool environment that does not exceed 25°C.
